Optimization and Comparative Analysis of Electric Machine Topologies with Varying Magnetic Materials

This research explores the integration of soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials in electric machines, comparing them with traditional laminated steel in various radial magnetic flux electric machine topologies designed for hybrid and electric vehicle traction.

Four distinct electric machine configurations are analyzed: rare earth interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPM), wound field synchronous machines (WFSM), spoke ferrite rare earth free permanent magnet synchronous machines (SP- FER), and induction (asynchronous) machines (IM). The benchmark is set by the IPM electric machine originating from a major Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), serving as a reference point with volumetric envelope specifications and performance criteria.
